Hi, does anyone know if greyscale controls are available on the Panasonic VT20 in any modes outside of the Pro/ISF modes? I’ve had a look at the manual and I can’t really tell. I have a potential customer who is asking me this question.

    Thanks

Grayscale for the thx mode is done in the service menu … so that means standard mode and vivid modes too from the sm …

Thanks Michael. Is there a code to access the service menu?

Also, another question… I have a Sencore VP403c signal gen (so doesn’t output 3D patterns) and the VT20 doesn’t do 2D – 3D conversion. The client’s BD player doesn’t have a 2D-3D conversion feature either. How can I calibrate for 3D since I need to at least use the glasses to set 3D for brightness and contrast? Is there a 3D patterns disc out there yet?

    Any ideas on this?

a 3d disc would work for you (but none available).

An alternative for 3D (if your display will not do conversion) is getting a DVD player that does do 2D-3D conversion.

Thanks Gregg. Any one got a recommendation for a really cheap player that does the 2D-3D conversion? Or is it more advisable to sell my Sencore 403c and get an Accupel DVG5000 instead?

Jules, I’d get a Panasonic BDT 110 for peanuts from Amazon UK. You can redeem 7 blu-rays from Panasonic including Avatar (3D) and Star Wars original trilogy. You could probably nearly cover the cost of the player selling Avatar alone although I know how much it would hurt you to part with it 😉

The 310 passed a nice true signal so I guess the 110 wont be any different.

Cheers Mark. Great minds think alike! That’s exactly what I decided to do a few days ago. I have a new 110 sitting in my office and the claim for the free discs has just gone off. I love my HD750 but I think need a new JVC 3D projector – (must remember to pay off my start up costs first though!). The new JVCs sound really exciting. Did the 1st half of my VT20 calibration last night. Menus are a complete pain and the stupid sliders without numbers making recording settings impossible. Still, got excellent results, though would have dearly liked a properly implemented CMS and gamma controls. Back to client tonight to calibrate for 3D. ‘Once more unto the breach…’ as Henry V said!

    Ha, good work.

Console yourself with the fact that the VT30 you’re doing next week will be much much more challenging 😀 Marginally OT for this thread but you need to have the OSD completely off when taking measurements of the VT30, they affect readings. It’s almost as much fun as skipping in an out of the service menu to calibrate.

Totally off topic – Had a play with the Toshiba auto-cal tool this week. I’ll try and post something somewhere here to share my experiences but the short version is that it was crap:)

Blimey the 3D on the VT20 was a nightmare. I didn’t realise beforehand that having the glasses pressed against the screen switched them off and as I didn’t think I’d need my tripod (well, why would you it’s a panel after all 🙂 ) the client ended up holding the sensor in front of the screen. It was really crappy. The greyscale was good from 100 down to 70 then there was a big spike in blue which trailed to nothing down to 10. Conversely red was really high at 10 and then trailed down to almost nothing at 60. Whatever I did I couldn’t correct it. Managed to get the primaries in their boxes with the (alleged) CMS but then luminance was through the roof on all colours. Contrast was maxed out but white wasn’t clipping and got 13 ftl. Put Avatar on and it looked fine enough – just as dull as dishwater as you expect 3D to look compared to 2D – but not much better than the default VT20 3D mode. Any suggestions? I’m going to go back with my tripod and have another go next week.

So what delights do I have to watch out for on the VT30?

Have you done the VT30 yet Jules? Sorry been a while since I logged in here. You could always give me a bell 🙂
