InactiveHello all,
I got a chance to play with the new Samsung 6000 display. I made the adjustments in Movie mode and Warm 2. RGB was fine, but my question lies with the CMS. As typical with the previous Samsung’s I have worked with in the past, I wasn’t able to get blue or red to their proper coordinates. Red was especially problematic. By turning the red saturation all the way up, it still didn’t get to the proper coordinate. However, red brightness shot way up of course. In addition, when I went to adjust for color using the blue screen, I had to crank it down, which of course shifted the saturation of each of the primaries and secondaries I had set in the CMS.
So,
Question 1…is it more objectionable to have a color be too bright and unsaturated, or should we go for broke and leave the correct brightness and remain unsaturated?
Question 2…once I set the CMS, and color shifts by adjusting the global color control, do we iterate back and forth until a compromise is reached, or accept that the CMS isn’t working the best it could and just use the global color control? The primaries and secondaries didn’t shift horribly (just out of the target boxes) but just enough.
Thanks

InactiveWhere does the triangle start out? Bigger than 709 or smaller? If smaller … can never magically add more colors to a tv that can’t display it. Like magically creating detail out of nothing …
Brightness above all else.
This is (will be addressed in the slide set) for the next class. Blue is usually close to start with so it is more like spinning the wheels if you obsess over it.

InactiveThanks Michael.
The triangle started out oversaturated in green, but under saturated in both blue and red. So, you are saying that it’s ok to have the brightness set high…correct?

InactiveYes … do what you can to tame the green … but don’t sweat it too much. It’s a compromise. If you are dealing with a case where the blue and red start off inside the triangle … we can’t say that it is absolutely correct to try to nail the green since it is all wrong anyway. Do what you can and make sure the brightness gets priority.
I updated the slide download area. Worthwhile to look at the new day 3 stuff.

InactiveI just worked on a Samsung UN46B6000 and found the red to be the biggest problem as well. Got DeltaE 1994 all less than 1.5 except for red which was at 7. absolute luminance all within 2. Impossible to get over any further as all the way to 0 and can go no lower. Probably limited by Samsung knowing display cannot replicate any better. If not would be nice if firmware update so it can be moved further.

InactiveSometimes you can take the color control and move it up or down to fix the red more … and hopefully the other controls still have the range to account for this.

GuestThe display starts with red and blue within the triangle. Can’t get it out further with CMS. Red being the worst offender. I just did a Samsung 46B8500 – no different.
Grayscale is great from 10-100%. All low dEs. CMS works fine on these sets. I’m happy. I hate the clouding on the 6000. Absolutely terrible.

InactiveIsn’t this an issue of not being able to “add” more color? Calibrators can taketh awayeth, but you cannot add…eth?

InactiveSame thing I encountered with the cms. Picture looked great but that clouding on the edge lit 6000 would be a deal breaker for me. I simply explained cms and clouding was limited by actual television. He bought the tv b/c it was official tv of nfl and he is a football fan so he was excited about calibration results and ready for the upcoming season.
