Digital is nothing but 1s and 0s. TV had no idea what to do with only 1s and 0s in the analog ports, regardless of what cable was connnected.
Remember, HDMI cables can carry analog or digital signals (though most carry digital now) depending on what type (digital/analog) signal you are sending down the cable.
