    Hi everyone

The cogs have been whirring and I’ve been thinking that ‘day’ calibrations of tv displays should be a non contact sport as far as meters are concerned, so as to measure the ambient light in the mix and be able to correct for same. I appreciate that if natural light is part of the equation, there will be a constant variable, however a ‘day’ setting may be used with controlled repeatable ambient lighting levels.

I’m currently using an i1 Pro 2 and i1 Display Pro III combo with Chromapure software. Contact measurements would not include ambient light reflecting from the display and therefore differ from the viewer’s image perception, which would be affected by all room lighting.

I’m not sure if we discussed different tv metering methods for night vs. day during the course from my recollection, but some clarification would be useful and appreciated as I seem to recall that tv measurements with the above kit were taken in contact mode.

    Regards

    Paul

On reflection, I think that I should have described natural light as a variable as opposed to constant variable.

non contact…..so you can measure the reflected ambient light

Day mode … exactly what time of day are we talking about? What time of year? What’s the weather like outside? Is the ambient lighting in all these situations the same? If yes … go ahead and add ambient light.

    If no … well …

i appreciate and have considered the point you raise regarding variable ambient light. When controlled ambient lighting is not an available option, would you pursue a particular plan of action other than to advise the client of the limitations of a ‘day’ calibration setting, in such an environment?

I advise them that you cannot have reference in a non-reference setting. All we hope for is getting close. That’s life. No one has argued against that. If they do … they are irrational.

Seems reasonable to me. i will be guided accordingly.
