As I’m sure many of you will as well, I am starting to have calibration clients asking me about the new firmware version for the VT20/25’s and GT25 Panasonic PDP’s, and James Cameron’s preferred picture settings for 3D.

It looks like marketing fluff to me and certainly not something that anyone with a calibrated display will want to bother with. Also, why would he not suggest the THX mode??

    Thoughts?

    without looking at your link
the Pannys do not have a THX mode while in 3D. The 3D mode is cinema mode.

My bad. I originally thought these settings for were for 2D and 3D. Forgot to include that in my edit.

Does this update wipe out the settings for the ISFccc Day and Night Modes?

I calibrated a VT25 with firmware version 3.5. I did not notice any difference in performance in 2D mode, but 3D was MUCH better out of the box. The gray scale is much closer to D65, with just a minor adjustment of red and blue. (Minus a few clicks) Color performance is improved with the color points relatively close to Rec.709. More importantly, the luminance errors have been corrected from the previous firmware version.

I suggest having your client’s update the firmware on these panels prior to calibration to get the best 3D picture quality.

As far as previous settings, including ISF modes, being wiped out assume they will be. I haven’t tested this yet personally but hope to soon. From various reports I’ve heard, some displays were reset, some weren’t. With the vast changes in 3D performance, I can’t see how a prior 3D calibration won’t be affected.

From what I’ve heard, Panasonic is supposed to be coming out with another firmware update that will enhance 3D pic quality like the 3.5 update, but won’t wipe out previous settings. I’m not sure when they plan to do this, of course, but it might be worthwhile to caution clients whose TVs you’ve already calibrated not to upgrade to 3.5 right now since it may wipe out the settings you’ve already applied.

    Best,
    Greg
