    Hi everyone

I thought it was about time I broke cover and posted a message. I’ve been calibrating a Panasonic GT30 46″ display, firstly in Professional1 mode for the night calibration without major incident. I thought i’d measure the THX mode and adjust in need via the service menu, to familiarize myself with this method. I’ve noticed that the 16:9 overscan setting is switched on and locked (greyed out). I’m somewhat surprised to see this as it’s contrary to what I was expecting. I went into the service menu to see what’s occurring and whether any options are available to switch the overscan off, which there aren’t unless I missed something.
I took a couple of pics of the service menu for my reference as I wanted to check some of the terms such as white balance method select.
I could do a daytime calibration on the Professional2 setting instead of the THX setting, but that’s the easier option and I won’t learn as much by doing it plus the THX setting will not be optimized. Any views/comments would be appreciated. For reference, the tv set belongs to me.

    Thanks

    Paul

In North America, the size controls are HD size 1 and 2. 2 is no overscan.

The THX mode on the 30 series was always a better calibration choice than the custom modes on that tv.

Thanks for the info Michael. Unfortunately on this UK model there does not appear to be a HD1 or 2 setting in the user or service menu or reference to same in the user manual pdf. There is however the setting “16:9 Overscan” (within advanced settings) which in THX mode is switched on and locked. HD1/2 and 16:9 Overscan appear to be the same setting, just named differently for US and UK models. They appear to perform the same function of either 1:1 pixel mapping or zooming the image, although, not having seen a US model, I could be mistaken.

    Thanks

    Paul

So if you feed it an overscan pattern in 1080p … it is cutting off the sides in the THX mode?

It looks that way to me. I fed a master 1920×1080 pattern from the qd780 to the tv via HDMI 1,then viewed it firstly in THX mode and secondly in cinema mode. The pattern has cropped circles on the four corners and top/bottom on the large circle in THX mode whilst cinema mode displays all the circles intact. I took a couple of pics to illustrate but the jpegs wouldn’t upload.

I think it’s time to contact Panasonic regarding this anomaly. Being a recent acquisition, the set is under warranty. In the meantime, I will use the Professional2 mode for the daytime calibration.
