The person that gives us the closest price to the new selling price will receive 2 free kits from THX Ltd.
thanks for assisting us!!
Questions:
1. We are wanting to redo the pricing. We do not want tiered pricing. What is a price point that you would want to buy for and still allow THX Ltd to make some money at? The only discount for quantity would be that you would save on shipping and handling if you are ordering in quantity.
2. Would you like the option of purchasing a wall plaque that says “THX Video Calibrated”? and or would you prefer this over the paper weight? This option would cost more.
thanks for your opinion!!!
added: the wall plaque would be something like 8×10 inches and would look metal but be plastic with raised THX logo etc (something like you would see when going into a theater).

Hi Gregg,
I would prefer to see a wall plaque myself. Acrylic would still be very nice. I think $75-100 for the wall plaque and an exclusive Blu-ray demonstration disc would help seal the deal a little better than the current arrangement. In all honesty, it is currently very difficult to encourage a customer to purchase a certified calibration when I don’t see much value in it myself. Give them something that has a real exclusivity and value feeling to it.
A good wall plaque and an exclusive Blu-ray demo disc similar to the original THX laser disc would really help to seal the deal at the $100 price point. Putting some Star Wars clips (original trilogy stuff thank you very much) on the disc would REALLY go a long way since they are not currently available on blu. I certainly would be much more enthusiastic about selling it. People are always willing to spend money IF they see something of benefit.

My guess is $100?
I would echo most of Shawn’s comments. I just talked to a customer about the certified calibration option and they weren’t biting. I don’t think a customer will be willing to pay very much if they aren’t convinced that there will be some verifiable improvement to their system itself or some other concrete value. Unfortunately, I was not really able to convince them of either, and as Shawn mentioned, I’m not convinced of it myself. I’m not going to give them a lower quality calibration just because they don’t choose the THX certification package. This customer was intrigued by the THX name, but not enough to pay very much to get it. He didn’t really like the paper weight option, which is why I think a wall plaque would be much more interesting. But, I still can’t see any customers paying more than $30 or even $50 for the package. Unfortunately, I am in no place to eat any of the cost myself.

I think the question is being misunderstood.
I am assuming you are talking about the pricing the kits to the calibrator ..Not the customer?
I think a good price point for the kits to the calibrator would be around $50..this would allow the calibrator to ether mark it up some or just include it with every calibration.Gregg Loewen;1831 wrote:2. This I think, would be a really nice option.
I think most customers that would be interested in a “THX” Calibration would rather have a really nice plaque that could ether be wall mounted or table top displayed…. looks far more professional then the paper weight option.
I am guessing the price issue would be the make or break on this.Just my $.02
March 19, 2010 at 2:05 pm #1627AnonymousInactiveI think that if it was priced in the under $50 price point to the calibrators, then we should have more incentive to pass it along to the clients.
Gregg and I pooled together and bought 200 of these things at $30 each. Factor in shipping and the Canadian dollar at the time we bought it and they cost me $40 each. While I don’t give these to everyone, I use the following criteria for these.
If the TV is a THX panel … I boost the price of calibration up by $25 and they get the kit regardless. I eat the $15 difference. Not too much to swallow.
If the TV has a functional CMS … ditto. Boost by $25.
If the unit is a projector with a CMS … the cost is boosted by $50 and they get the kit regardless. Then I get the extra $10 …
Everything seems to work out right now and I break even on this proposition. The projectors even out the small loss on the panel side. Clients all like the paper weight because they were not expecting it.
I’m not sure how many would like the wall plaque … or to pay extra for it. Maybe 1/4 of the people who got kits now care about such things. $45 max for a kit like this.
regards

i don’t think we want the conversation of for $x more i can do a THX calibration
we should be able to include it in the price when desired
i like the idea of the wall plaque, not sure how customers will feelmark

I like this idea…to be able to include it as a “freebie or value added extra”.March 23, 2010 at 9:40 pm #1633AnonymousInactiveI agree that it should be ~ $30 to $50 for the calibrator. I would send in ~$20 everytime just to tell customer THX certified calibration, for results to be checked, and for the THX Certified Video Calibration certificate / Thank you letter. Most of my business is in competition with the chain companies and by adding additional cost for items that don’t increase the picture quality it makes it a hard sell for me to take the hit with price competition. Some small THX video calibrated clear stickers with white writing would be great to put on corner of television or below manufacturer name on front of monitor would be great and would be seen by friends watching monitor to spur up word of mouth business. Couldn’t be happier with decision to take course and get into the business. Really enjoy what doing now and learning more with every day and display.
March 23, 2010 at 11:26 pm #1634AnonymousInactiveBeing from Norway one of my concerns when it comes to the discussion of paper weight, wall plaque or other add on items related to the calibration is price, shipping costs and on top of that the tax I have to pay when getting the items trough customs here in Norway (add 25% of total cost of items and shipping). I guess that the cost of having it in hand here in Norway will probably be double of what ever the list price to calibrator will be. I would really like to be able to add some thing like this to the calibrations I do, but for me it will come down to how much I have to charge extra to make up for the cost.
Based on discussions with friends, clients and others at a couple of small trade shows the last couple of months I have ended up dividing my potential clients in three groups for this discussion.
First are the ones that have read or been told that they should have their display calibrated and just want it done so that they can stop wondering what it means. They will most of the time agree that they can see the difference, but they won´t even ask for a report and couldn´t care less for a plaque of a paper weight. For this group it would though be nice to be able to leave an “official” THX demo disk. Not sure they would ever use it, but as part of the education during the session I talk about the user settings and having an “official” disk to hand over at the end of the session would be a nice thing.
The next group are the ones that take an interest in the before and after report, and that take active part during the education part of the calibration. In addition to an “official” THX demo disk and the reports from the calibration for this group I think the possibility of providing some sort of letter stating that the display is calibrated within THX specifications would add some value. Don´t think they would pay extra for it, but this is something I would be able to factor into my pricing. This would set me apart from other calibrators.
The last group are the ones that I think would be potential customers for a plaque. Typically they will have a dedicated home theater and will already have some THX, DTS, DD or brand name plaques on the wall. We have some people producing wall plaques in Norway, and online sources abroad as well. It turns out people are willing to pay 70-80 USD for a nice looking wall plaque with the “right” logo – THX being one of those logos:D
For this group of people it would be great to have the option of providing a nice, unique THX wall plaque that only could be gotten trough a certified calibrator after a calibration job. This would be a plaque that would mean something in their home theater, and set them apart. A plaque like that next to an THX letter stating that the display system in the home theater is THX certified, and with a valid until date would be a nice addition for an enthusiast. Not to mention that the follow up calibration would be more or less sealed…..
Of course the “official” demo disk would be nice here as well. Most of them will probably have one or more of the calibration disk already, but a unique THX disk would be a nice addition.
Long reply, but I spent some time thinking trough this after the training class in January as part of figuring out my marketing plan, and with the question of a plaque coming up I ended up going through it again.
Not sure what a THX disk would cost, but I think 15-20 USD for a unique demo disk wouldn´t be a problem. The THX approval letter for the calibrated display would obviously come at a cost as well. For some clients the option of getting a unique wall plaque for an additional cost would be nice. I would like to see my cost of that plaque to be in the 25-30 USD price range, but I really don´t know if that is possible. I don´t want to come across a penny pincher, but as mentioned I´m looking at doubling the cost here in Norway before I get my hands on the items.
G-man

March 24, 2010 at 6:15 pm #1636AnonymousInactiveMake that sticker easily removable and I will take 1000 of them. 🙂
Also good for the back of the TV and add writing about recalibration or at least when the calibration was done and by whom.
March 28, 2010 at 8:27 pm #1644AnonymousInactivejust use the same kind of stickers they use to put in your window after an oil change.
March 28, 2010 at 9:37 pm #1645AnonymousInactiveExactly what I was thinking!
March 29, 2010 at 12:38 pm #1646Gregg LoewenKeymastergood thoughts….
the goal for THX is to provide a “kit” at a “price” where:
1. THX can have a revenue stream
2. Calibrators can purchase at a reasonable price WHILE NOT HAVING a barrier to purchase (due to the cost).
3. encourage THX Calibrators to get a kit for EVERY job they perform.March 29, 2010 at 9:12 pm #1647AnonymousInactiveBlu Ray disc with original trilogy clips…not special edition clips (I am sure Michael would agree! 😀 ) that is exclusive to calibrators and not handed out to every Tom, Dick and Harry seals the deal for me! 😀
