Hi, I’ve noticed that with every firmware update the plasma D8000s have been getting dimmer. Today I calibrated a 64″ D8000 and could only get 41FtL from it in Standard mode with everything maxed – cell light, contrast, offsets and gains. Problem is this introduced horrible side effects like clipping. I tamed this by cutting back on contrast and the offsets and gains but the end result was that I only had an output 37FtL. This rendered Standard mode practically useless because the far more accurate Movie mode produced 34FtL. When my client posted about this issue on the D8000 thread at AVForums I was asked whether I had gone into the service menu and adjusted ADC values as, it is being said, Samsung have limited the light output with recent firmware updates. When this is reset to the original value the TV outputs a lot more light. I’m unsure how to respond (a) because I’ve never ventured (nor had to) into the D8000 service menu (b) because I’d want to be sure that I’m not voiding any warranty or (c) doing some damage to the TV by this action. Can someone please advise on these matters? I’ll go back to the client and recalibrate if necessary but I need to know where I stand on this first. Thanks.
