“always try to use the original TV remote where possible. Things like Harmony remotes and other all in one remotes may not have all the buttons you need to press”

    * While the TV is on, unplug the power cable. (Don’t just turn it off with the remote … it has to be physically unplugged to work.) A powerbar with a long cord is a handy thing to have when dealing with Sharp LCD displays.

    * Then while pressing the “INPUT” & “VOL -” buttons on the remote, plug the power cable back into the outlet.

*On some earlier model Sharp LCD units, this was all you needed to get into the service menu. On the newer units … keep reading …

    * When it powers up you will see a little “k” appear in brackets.
    * Then on the TV, press and hold “VOL -” & “CH -” down and release.
    * The Service Menu will be displayed.

    * Use “CH+” & “CH -” buttons to navigate
    * Use “VOL+” & “VOL -” buttons to adjust the value.

    * Turn the set off to exit the Service Menu.

This tip came from Randy Tomlinson (Rest is peace, you will be missed.) a few months before he passed on.

Here’s a tidbit for calibration. It’s actually very calibration friendly for grayscale … if you know where to look in the service menu.

The Sharp does not use a traditional cut driver based grayscale system. The TV’s base grayscale is done with a six point grayscale system. It was hiding in plain sight all the time.

Look at the Gamma section of the SM … Gamma 1.2.3.4.5.6 … broken down into RGB …

    Each Gamma has three colors … 1 R …. 1 G … 1 B … 2 R … 2G … 2B and so on.

I’ve gone and tried to figure out what each corresponds to. They correlate to 20% 35% 50% 65% 80% 95% roughly speaking.

So here you go … make sure you write the changes as you go along.

And Thank you Randy … where ever you are.

    Feb 2008 update…

64U panels … have added the old CMS system back in. It has limited sensitivity, but can improve the secondaries here.

6 point gamma works on the 64U through component video … verified.

    October 2008 update …

Sometimes the Gamma 1-6 stuff may not all work right. Only half of it works at times. This is likely due to the firmware revision that the TV is using and unfortunately, there is no way for us to know which firmware allows what.

Always be careful of the sharps as a result. The gamma grayscale system may work or it may not work. Needs closer examination so do not jump in there and promise a client you can do something here when you might not be able to. Each unit must be individually verified.

Also note that on some of the 64 series, the bottom portion of the grayscale might be completely immune from what you do with the 6 gamma controls. I.E. a green tinted black stays green tinted no matter what you really do.

n45 ” sharp info: Basically, you have the LCD on then UNPLUG the power to the LCD (not the AVC) and then while holding the input and volume (-) down, replug the set in. When it powers up you will see a little “k” appear in brackets. Then on the set, hit and hold the vol(-) and ch(-) down and release and you will see the service menu.

on many Sharp displays…you can remove the access panel on the bottom front of the remote. You will see a 3-4 rows of holes with about 4-5 holes in each row. Press the bottom hole in (2nd in from the right). You may have to do this twice. Do the same procedure to exit.

    · ..Power Down at the panel.
    · ..Hold down INPUT and Vol+ on the panel . Turn on the Plasma at the Panel.
    · ..The Service Menu will come up. Scroll down using the arrow keys.
    · ..To exit, power it down.
From the “Off” State, turn ON the Power while holding down the INPUT and VOL DOWN buttons located in the LCD Display Unit.
    1-Cursor Up-Returns to previous page
2-Cursor Down–Proceeds to the next page
    3-Volume up Key–Increases Adjusted Value by 10
4-Volume down Key–Increases Adjusted Value by 10Cursor Right–
5- Cursor Right (Increases the adjusted value by 1)
6- Cursor Left (Decreases the adjusted value by 1)
    7-Channe1 l Up Key
    8-Channe1 2 Down Key

Hold down the Vol- and Ch- bottons at the set simultaneously, and then plug the panel into the AC outlet. This will bring up a K on screen. Then hit Vol- and Ch- simultaneously again, which will bring you to the first page of the Service Menu. The rest of the navigation procedure remains the same. .

User menu has RGB Gains and 12 point CMS however on the unit that I calibrated the Saturation adjustment did not seem to work at all for the secondaries. Also there was not enough range of adjustments on some of the other items to get the set to 100%.

    Happy Calibrating,

Sharp LC-46LE700UN LED LCD … Notes

    Greetings

I got a chance for some quality time in the store showroom floor with this new unit. A few gawks from passerbys …. what is that guy doing?

    Good News:

WB controls are in the user menu. Full set of Gains and Bias controls. 6 in all.
    Selectable gamma. -2 to +2
CMS Hue … Saturation … “Value?”

    Bad News:

Color gamut is slightly less than 709 … clips a bit of the green to yellow sliver.

With gamma set to -2 … overall gamma is about 2.3.
Start with low color temp and the WB controls can get the image into line here. The other modes are too blue for the tv to fix the grayscale.

The Value part of the CMS is Brightness. The system seems to work and I could fix the brightness levels and the saturation and the hue. Saturation controls both brightness and saturation.

Did not appear to affect grayscale after the cms was worked on. Nice.

Got the color values under dE 2 for the most part … easy

A definite step up from those thin XS series ones that can’t be calibrated right.

    regards
