    “always try to use the original TV remote where possible. Things like Harmony remotes and other all in one remotes may not have all the buttons you need to press”

    * Press the INPUT … 6 … 1 … 9 buttons on the remote.

    * The Service Menu will be displayed.

    * Please note that on some plasma units, there are no usable controls in this area. Seems dependent on the firmware in the set, but the ones without usable controls will still have items like RGB and these will change the image. The problem is, they will not save to memory and will reset to factory defaults once you change any user parameter in the TV menu.

    * The only way to properly calibrate the grayscale on these locked out sets is to use an external scaler device with grayscale controls.

    * Input Select: Show Inputs needs to be set to “ALL”. If it is set to “ACTIVE”, it will not work.

    * WARNING!! – Stay away from any controls that have the words “calibration” in them. Dell units have these parameters that once activated, the changes cannot be undone and the TV must be sent back to the factory for repair.

    * Turn on the TV and select the input to adjust. The adjustments are not going to be global so you will have to copy some setting numbers over to other inputs if they don’t copy automatically.

    * Turn the TV off.

    * In quick sequence on the remote, press MUTE … 1 … 8 … 2 … POWER

    * Avoid any menu item that sounds remotely like “auto calibration.” If you
    activate this, you will mess up the TV royally and you cannot recover from it. A repair visit will be required at your expense.

    * Take note of which grayscale setting you are actually changing in the service menu when you come back out. The TV reverts to Dynamic mode.

    LG also sells a Service Remote that directly accesses the Service menu of the TV set.

    Addition from Dave BJ for the LCD and PLASMA flat panels.

    Hi Michael,

    I have an LG 52LG60 120 Hz 52″ ISF-certified LCD set here (it’s part of their newest 2008 model line-up).

    Unlike earlier LG models, this series includes fully accessible calibration and CMS controls with no password or service remote needed.

    There are two Expert modes (1 and 2). These include the same range of adjustments as other picture memories (and pretty much match the default settings as provided by the Cinema mode), but can also be turned into ISF Day and ISF Night by doing the following:

    Call up the picture menu and go to picture mode (Expert 1 or 2 as appropriate).

    When the desired mode is highlighted, press 8-7-4-1 on the remote, and a pop-up window provides the choice of ISF Day or ISF Night.

    After the choice is made, and you back out of the menu, the picture settings are locked for that particular mode.

    To unlock, repeat the above procedure.

    Note that while other 2008 LG sets maybe similar in terms of their picture adjustment/calibration options (and the one-size-fits-many-models owner’s manual suggests likewise), only select models are ISF-certified so the above only applies to those.

    The set also offers two-point or 10-point calibration adjustment options. I was able to dial the set in extremely well with the two-point (conventional high/low) option, but when I went to try the 10-point, I couldn’t get near to the same results as I did with the two-point. Weird.

    Except for getting the typical “hockey stick” deviations at 10 IRE that you would expect with other LCD sets, the 20-100 post-cal grayscale range was textbook-perfect.

    Best,

    DBJ

    *** Notes about the THX plasma. The CMS is a 12 point system. It does not work right so please be careful if you try to tackle it. There has to be 18 controls for it to be correctly done … 12 does not do it.

    The 10 point grayscale my be a problem so watch out for that. The 2 point system may actually yield a better result than the 10 point. Look at a gray ramp after you tackle the 10 point system.

    “always try to use the original TV remote where possible. Things like Harmony remotes and other all in one remotes may not have all the buttons you need to press”

    * While the TV is on, unplug the power cable. (Don’t just turn it off with the remote … it has to be physically unplugged to work.) A powerbar with a long cord is a handy thing to have when dealing with Sharp LCD displays.

    * Then while pressing the “INPUT” & “VOL -” buttons on the remote, plug the power cable back into the outlet.

    *On some earlier model Sharp LCD units, this was all you needed to get into the service menu. On the newer units … keep reading …

    * When it powers up you will see a little “k” appear in brackets.
    * Then on the TV, press and hold “VOL -” & “CH -” down and release.
    * The Service Menu will be displayed.

    * Use “CH+” & “CH -” buttons to navigate
    * Use “VOL+” & “VOL -” buttons to adjust the value.

    * Turn the set off to exit the Service Menu.

    This tip came from Randy Tomlinson (Rest is peace, you will be missed.) a few months before he passed on.

    Here’s a tidbit for calibration. It’s actually very calibration friendly for grayscale … if you know where to look in the service menu.

    The Sharp does not use a traditional cut driver based grayscale system. The TV’s base grayscale is done with a six point grayscale system. It was hiding in plain sight all the time.

    Look at the Gamma section of the SM … Gamma 1.2.3.4.5.6 … broken down into RGB …

    Each Gamma has three colors … 1 R …. 1 G … 1 B … 2 R … 2G … 2B and so on.

    I’ve gone and tried to figure out what each corresponds to. They correlate to 20% 35% 50% 65% 80% 95% roughly speaking.

    So here you go … make sure you write the changes as you go along.

    And Thank you Randy … where ever you are.

    Feb 2008 update…

    64U panels … have added the old CMS system back in. It has limited sensitivity, but can improve the secondaries here.

    6 point gamma works on the 64U through component video … verified.

    October 2008 update …

    Sometimes the Gamma 1-6 stuff may not all work right. Only half of it works at times. This is likely due to the firmware revision that the TV is using and unfortunately, there is no way for us to know which firmware allows what.

    Always be careful of the sharps as a result. The gamma grayscale system may work or it may not work. Needs closer examination so do not jump in there and promise a client you can do something here when you might not be able to. Each unit must be individually verified.

    Also note that on some of the 64 series, the bottom portion of the grayscale might be completely immune from what you do with the 6 gamma controls. I.E. a green tinted black stays green tinted no matter what you really do.

    “always try to use the original TV remote where possible. Things like Harmony remotes and other all in one remotes may not have all the buttons you need to press”

    This would be for both the 720P and 1080P units. The 1080P units have only three usable items in the SM. All other parameters are locked out.

    From the Remote Control:

    * Press the “MENU” button and go to the User Menu screen, make sure that the indicator (arrow) is pointed and highlights the “Picture Control”.

    * The buttons on the top of the remote are set to TV and VCR respectively.

    * Set sleep timer to “0” minutes and while it is displayed, simultaneously press the “VIDEO STATUS” & “DISPLAY” buttons.

    * The main service menu will appear with choices #1 through #9.
    Press one of the corresponding number keys to enter that menu.

    Press the “CH+” & “CH-” buttons to navigate within a menu.
    Press the “VOL+” & “VOL-” buttons to change the values.
    Press the “MUTING” button to memorize the changed value.
    Press the “BACK” button to exit the service menu.

    “always try to use the original TV remote where possible. Things like Harmony remotes and other all in one remotes may not have all the buttons you need to press”

    Consumer Versions

    (Confirmed to work on latest 75/77 series and 1080p panels)

    * Hold down the “VOL -” button on the TV. Press the “RECALL” button 3 times on the remote. Service menu will appear.

    ** It should be noted that note all models use this method. Some older models from 2004 and earlier use the same access sequence as the CRT based sets

    ** The access to the service menu on the “5” series units from 2005 did not give any usable parameters in the service menu. On these sets, access to the “real” service menu is only by a modified service remote control. You will need to have a pronto type device so that you can download the proper CCF file for that remote.

    * Use “1” & “2” on remote to navigate main menu items

    * Use “3” & “4” on remote to navigate sub-menu items

    * Use “VOL+” & “VOL -” on remote to change item value

    * Write down all values before changing. Once a value is changed, THE CHANGE IS MADE.

    * Power off to exit service mode and save.

    ** The controlling grayscale is selected from the Vivid mode of the user menu. If Vivid was set to “cool” … then the grayscale values you see in the service area are the “cool” values.

    ** The sets should be capable of setting up six specific grayscales. Three on the SD signal side and three on the HD signal side.

    Industrial Versions

    ** Although it is possible to do the grayscale in the user menu in the advanced section, it is recommended that you start in the service menu as the user side may not give you enough range in the controls.

    * tested on the 8UK / 9UK model types

    * Hold down the “VOL -” button on the display. Press the “STATUS” button 3 times on the remote. (Status button usually is the one above Setup button)

    * The service menu will appear in the top right of the screen.

    * Use the cursors keys on the remote to select a mode. And press the Action button to access the menu.

    * To exit each mode, press the “R” button.
    * To exit the CATS menu, press the “STATUS” button.

    * Press “POWER” button on the Plasma to exit the service mode.

    ***Notes on the 750 versions of Panasonic 1080p plasma sets. The Studio mode is different from the other sets that just have a Cinema mode. In the SM, it is still called the Cinema mode. The big difference in this TV is that the Studio mode cannot be grayscale adjusted in the service menu. Changes to Warm/Cool/Normal have no impact on the grayscale in this mode.

    Calibrate in the Custom mode and you will still get good gamma. Grayscale linearity seems worse on this set compared to the 75/77/700 units.

    ***Additional notes about the 2008 series. On some of the units, changes in the SM do not translate into the User side. The changed values remain in the SM … but the user side shows nothing has happened.

    Press the enter action button to write this to the memory and it will now show up in the user side too.

    For Models 7700, 8720

    * Menu … up … down … up … down … up … down

    * Confirm that the grayscale controls in the user settings actually memorize the changes you make. On some units, the values on the user side will not be memorized. The only way to make the grayscale changes stay is to do it in the service menu and store the changes to one of the 5 grayscale memory banks.

    For Model 8700 (+)

    * With unit already on … press Menu … Power ON … Menu to access the service area.

    * Fonts in the lower corner change in color from blue to red.

    * Grayscale values are tied to the type of input you are plugged into on the projector.

    * Remember to save changes in the service area to both video and graphics grayscale areas.

    * To Exit the Service menu … press Menu … Power ON … Menu.

    The 2006 model year units appear to be made by the Orion company. The same one that builds the Toshiba plasma sets.

    Use the Toshiba access codes.

    With volume to zero … hold the button on the panel.

    Now press “9” on the remote and hold down …

    The service menu appears.

    channel +/- scrolls
    volume +/- changes the parameters

    To exit … hit menu button on remote.

    Access to grayscale items for cool, normal and warm are all available here.

    there are separate memories for 1080i … 720p … 480p … and maybe 480i too.

    hi
    Added note:

    STVPro2007 supports all Pioneer Elite plasmas via the RS232 “direct connect” interface.

    Please note that newer Elites have TV Guide. This feature must be disabled (the setting is under the TVGuide Setup option, select auto off on turn on ).

    This set of steps will get you to the Factory menu for many more controls.
    Best to have the service manual in hand, though:

    Enter….Enter……Left……Enter

    then left for YEs …
